Jagan begins 48-hour Chenetha Deeksha
Dharmavaram, Anantapur
Kadapa MP and YSR Congress Party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy has begun his 48-hour 'Chenetha Deeksha' (fast) at Dharmavaram in Anantapur district. The hunger strike is aimed to get the government's attention on the problems faced by weaving community in the State. He begun the hunger strike on Sunday evening at the government junior college grounds that will span over three days.
A huge number of farmers, weavers, YSR Congress Party supporters, party workers gathered at the grounds in support of the YSR Congress Party chief. Addressing the gathering, Jagan severely criticized the Government's attitude towards farmers. He said that former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy has allotted Rs. 312 crore for waiver of debts of weavers and after his demise, the Government has not released the funds. With the new budget being presented in the next two to three days, he questioned when the Government will release those funds.
17 suicides in a span of one year
The Dharmavaram sarees are popular not only in the State, but in the whole country, he said. The situation in the town in the last few months became unbearable. As many as 17 weavers have committed suicide in the last one year, he said. During that period over 50 weavers ended their life in the State. Even in such disastrous conditions, not one politician from the Government has come to the town to find the cause of the suicides, Jagan said.
Two Demands
The YSR Congress Party chief said that the Government should resolve two demands primarily.
- To release the funds worth Rs. 312 crore that were alloted to waive the debts of weavers by the former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on his second term.
- To release the fee reimbursement funds for the students. Jagan said that to end poverty, people need to be literates. To enable this, the Government has to support education to children in every family. However, the fee reimbursement funds for this year was not yet released, he said.
Jagan reached Dharmavaram from Pulivendula in the morning. On his way to the Dharmavaram town, Jagan unveiled the statues of YSR at Indukuru and Battalapalli villages. Though, he was suffering with high temperature, Jagan went ahead with the hunger strike. A doctor has checked his condition at 9pm and suggested him to take medicines which Jagan rejected.
